CHAPTER 14

“Thanks, come again,” Sophia told the customer as she handed her a bag and receipt. The older woman smiled politely and thanked Sophia before turning around and leaving the store.

Della watched proudly. When Sophia had asked to be shown how to run the cash register so she could “do her part” that morning, Della had expected her to lose interest fast. Instead, Sophia seemed to shine. When the woman who just bought a vintage candy dish had left the store, Della said, “You’re doing that like an old pro.”

“What? It’s not like serving customers is hard,” Sophia said as she playfully tossed her hair over her shoulder.

Della gave her a pointed look. “That woman tried to pull a fast one with those price tags, but you caught it. That was a good eye.”

Sophia shrugged. “I wasn’t going to let someone rob you. I wasn’t born yesterday,” she scoffed.

“I didn’t really expect you to like something as simple as helping customers in a store. It just seems so…” she searched for the right word. “Mundane for you.”

“Sometimes mundane stuff is peaceful. No need to wrack your brain or get stressed out. You do what needs to be done and, boom, it’s done.” Sophia shrugged. “There’s something reassuring about the simplicity of it all.”

Della could see her point. No big clients or meetings. No big budgets or companies depending on you. It was just serving the general public and helping them have a decent day.

The door opened again and before Della could turn to see who it was, she saw her sister’s jaw drop open. “Holy mother of muscles,” she gasped. “I think I’m going to faint.”

Della was about to turn when she heard a familiar voice. “Hey, Della. Are you being good today?”

She turned to find Sheriff Metcalf giving her one of his easy smiles. “You know that’s an impossible task for me.”

Sheriff Metcalf chuckled. “That I do. You look pretty today.”

Despite every brain cell screaming at her not to blush, she could feel the heat rising in her cheeks anyway. It had to be the low rumble of his voice mixed with that drawl that made her knees weak. That had to be what it was. “Thanks.”

She turned to look at her sister. “This woman doing a great impression of a fish out of water is my sister, Sophia. Sophia, this is Sheriff Jared Metcalf.”

Realization exploded across Sophia’s face. Della suddenly regretted telling her sister so much when the surprise morphed into a wicked smile. “So this is the famous sheriff I’ve heard so much about,” she said as she extended her hand to him. She was never one to be subtle, but she wasn’t even trying to be now. Della wanted to groan. Of course, her sister would tell him she’d been talking about him.

“I hope it’s all been good,” he chuckled, looking pleased. And why wouldn’t he?

Sophia’s smile turned wicked. “Oh, it has.” Her eyes flashed with unspoken words.

Della cleared her throat. “So, uh, was there something you needed?” she asked the sheriff.
